Invitation to lecture

The Piaśnica Museum in Wejherowo invites to an open lecture by Professor Grzegorz Berendt titled “Covering up traces of German Nazi crimes in Gdańsk Pomerania in 1944. The activities of commando unit 1005.” The lecture will be given on 17 May at 4:00 p.m., in the conference room of the Town Office in Wejherowo, at 195 12 Marca St.


We invite students, teachers, association members and all those interested in the problem. Because of the subject of the lecture, we recommend that the participants be at least 13 years old. The purpose of the lecture will be discussion of issues related to the destroying by members of the German Third Reich security apparatus of evidence of mass crimes perpetrated from beginning of World War II against civilians in Poland and in other conquered countries. The operation was codenamed 1005 and was made strictly confidential. In 1944 its implementation was commenced in Gdańsk Pomerania and in Kuyavia regions. The lecturer will present the present knowledge on who and to what effect conducted operation 1005 in Reichsgau Danzig - West Prussia. The said operation was also the last act of the massacre in Piaśnica.

Professor Grzegorz Berendt, Ph.D., is a member of the research personnel of the University of Gdańsk and of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). He holds the position of the Head of Jewish History Section. Amongst his academic interests there are issues related to the history of Polish Jews and of the inhabitants of Gdańsk Pomerania in the 20th century. Professor Berendt is the author of several dozens of academic publications for university scholars and for the general public, including, amongst others “Żydzi na gdańskim rozdrożu (1945-1950)” (Jews at the Danzig Crossroads (1945-1950)); “Żydzi na terenie Wolnego Miasta Gdańska w latach 1920–1945” (Jews in the Free City of Danzig in the years 1920-1945); “Danuta Siedzikówna Inka (1928–1946)” [written in co-operation with Marzena Kruk]; “II wojna światowa w Lęborku i okolicy” (World War II in Lębork and in its surrounding areas). Admission to the lecture will be free.
