“Don't Let Memory be Overgrown with Grass... Clean up the Grave Next Door” – a Joint Effort to Tidy up the Old Cemetery in Wejherowo

monument to the victims of Stutthof at the Old Cemetery in Wejherowo

On October 24, 2025, another edition of the nationwide social and educational campaign “Don't let memory be overgrown with grass... Clean up the grave next door” took place at the historic Old Cemetery at 7 Sportowa Street in Wejherowo, organized by the Piaśnica Museum in Wejherowo.

The event was aimed not only at tidying up neglected graves, but also at drawing attention to the need to care for local memorial sites and reminding people of the history of the cemetery.

After a short introduction by the organizers and a discussion of safety rules, the participants began their cleaning work. Together, they removed leaves and undergrowth, cleaned monuments, lit candles, and laid flowers on forgotten graves. The campaign, combining action with reflection, became an opportunity to talk about history, memory, and responsibility for the heritage of past generations.

The initiative was attended by students and teachers from schools in Wejherowo, representatives of the uniformed services, and residents of the city.
We would like to express our special thanks to:

  • Primary School No. 8 in Wejherowo and teachers Olga Bank and Dorota Chodubska with classes 6B and 7B,
  • District School Complex No. 3 in Wejherowo and volunteer supervisor Adrianna Bychowska with class 3H,
  • as well as prison services, firefighters, and military personnel who actively participated in the cleanup work.

The Piaśnica Museum would like to thank all participants for their commitment, collaboration, and sensitivity to the need to preserve memory.

Thanks to such initiatives, local memorial sites are regaining their rightful respect and significance, and the idea of caring for the past is becoming a reality.
